The French Lieutenant's

The French Lieutenant's Woman (1969), by John Fowles, is a period novel inspired by the 1823 novel Ourika, by Claire de Duras, which Fowles translated into English in 1977 (and revised in 1994). Fowles was a great aficionado of Thomas Hardy, and, in particular, likened his heroine, Sarah Woodruff, to Tess of the d'Urbervilles, the protagonist of Hardy's popular novel of Authentic Ryan Succop Jersey the same name (1891). During 2006, it was adapted for the stage, by Mark Healy, in a version which toured the UK that year.[1][2] In 2005, the novel was chosen by TIME magazine as one of the one hundred best Englishlanguage novels from 1923 to present.[3]

The novel's protagonist is Sarah Woodruff, the Woman of the title, also known unkindly as "Tragedy" and by the unfortunate nickname "The French Lieutenant's Whore". She lives in the coastal town of Lyme Regis, as a disgraced woman, supposedly abandoned by a French naval officer named Varguennes married, unknown to her, to another Authentic Brian Schwenke Jersey woman with whom she had supposedly had an affair and who had returned to France.

She spends her limited time off at the Cobb, a pier jutting out to sea, staring at the sea itself. One Ryan Succop Jersey day, she is seen there by the gentleman Charles Smithson and his fiance, Ernestina Freeman, the shallowminded daughter of a wealthy tradesman whose origins are Scottish. Ernestina tells Charles something of Sarah's story, and he develops a strong curiosity about her. Eventually, he and she begin to meet clandestinely, during which times Sarah tells Charles her history, and asks for his support, mostly emotional. Despite trying to remain objective, Charles eventually sends Sarah to Exeter, where he, during a journey, cannot resist stopping in to visit and see her. At the time she has suffered an ankle injury; he visits her alone and after they have made love he realises that she had been, contrary to the rumours, a virgin. Simultaneously, he learns that his prospective inheritance from an elder uncle is in jeopardy; the uncle has become engaged to a woman young enough to bear him an heir.

From there, the novelist offers three different Brian Schwenke Jersey endings for The French Lieutenant's Woman.

First ending: Charles marries Ernestina, and their marriage is unhappy; Sarah's fate is unknown. Charles tells Ernestina about an encounter which he implies is with the "French Lieutenant's Whore", but elides the sordid details, and the matter is ended. This ending, however, might be dismissed as a daydream, before the alternative events of the subsequent meeting with Ernestina are described.

Before the second and third endings, the narrator who the novelist wants the reader to believe is John Fowles himself appears as a minor character sharing a railway compartment with Charles. He tosses a coin to Ryan Succop Titans Jersey determine the order in which he will portray the two, other possible endings, emphasising their equal plausibility.

Second ending: Charles and Sarah become intimate; he ends his engagement to Ernestina, with unpleasant consequences. He is disgraced, and his uncle marries, then produces an heir. Sarah flees to London without telling the enamoured Charles, who searches for her for years, before finding her living with several artists (seemingly the Rossettis), enjoying an artistic, creative life. He then learns he has fathered a child with her; as a family, their future is open, with possible reunion implied.

Third ending: the narrator reappears, standing outside the house where the second ending occurred; at the aftermath. He turns back his pocket watch by fifteen minutes, before leaving in his carriage. Events are the same as in the secondending version but, when Charles finds Sarah again, in London, their reunion is sour. It is possible that their union was childless; Sarah Brian Schwenke Titans Jersey does not tell Charles about a child, and expresses no interest in continuing the relationship. He leaves the house, deciding to return to America, and sees the carriage, in which the narrator was thought gone. Raising the question: is Sarah a manipulating, lying woman of few morals, exploiting Charles's obvious love to get what she wants?

En route, Fowles the novelist discourses upon the difficulties of controlling the characters, and offers analyses of differences in 19thcentury customs and class, the theories of Charles Darwin, the poetry of Matthew Arnold, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and the literature of Thomas Hardy. Philosophically, Existentialism is mentioned several times during the story, and in particular detail at the end, after the portrayals of the two, apparent, equally possible endings.

ReviewThe Beatles' Second

ReviewThe Beatles' Second Album was the first album of the group's work to be assembled by Capitol Records exclusively for the American market (as opposed to, say, Meet the Beatles!, which was a reconfigured and shortened version of With the Beatles). As such, it offends some historical purists, who don't think of it as a real album. Regardless of its origins, however, The Beatles' Second Album stands as probably best pure rock roll album ever issued of the group's music. In the process of pulling songs from various British and American EPs, singles (including "She Loves You") and Bsides, as well as tracks left over from the editing of With the Beatles for American release, the compilers somehow managed Authentic Donte Moncrief Jersey to avoid any trace of the pop ballads favored by Paul McCartney that usually slowed down the group's other early albums, and the result was the longest uninterrupted body of hard rock roll and R in their entire output. The Beatles' Second Album is the Beatles' second Capitol Records album, and their third album released in the United States including Introducing. The Beatles released three months earlier on Vontae Davis Jersey VeeJay Records.

The Beatles' Second Album went to number one on the Authentic Vontae Davis Jersey album charts in the US, knocking off Meet the Beatles!, the first time an artist replaced itself at number one on the US album charts.[3]

In 2004 this album was rereleased for the first time on Compact Disc (catalogue number CDP 7243 8 66877 Donte Moncrief Jersey 2 2), (CDP 7243 8 66878 2 1) as part of The Capitol Albums, Volume 1 box set and was issued in a miniature cardboard replica of the original album sleeve. This album was also released in the US on 8track cartridge in 1967, and reel to reel tape and cassette in 1969."The Beatles' Second Album stands as probably best pure rock roll album ever issued of the group's music," wrote Allmusic.[1] That is because the album "avoid[s] any trace of the pop ballads favored by Paul McCartney that usually slowed down the group's other early albums, and the result was the longest uninterrupted body of hard rock roll and R in their entire output."[1] Indeed, more than half the album is made up of rock n' roll and R covers.

Songs for this album were compiled from four different UK releases. Included were the five remaining tracks from the group's second British LP With the Beatles. Those songs were left off the previous Capitol album Meet the Beatles!. Also included were "Thank You Girl" (the Bside to the British single "From Me to You"), the single "She Loves You" / "I'll Get You", "You Can't Do That" from the A Hard Day's Night soundtrack Donte Moncrief Colts Jersey in the UK, and two new songs, "Long Tall Sally" and "I Call Your Name," both released a month later in the UK on the Long Tall Sally EP. Also, the Capitol Records engineers, headed by record executive Dave Dexter, Jr, added a lot of echo and reverb to the stereo versions to give the music more of a "live" feel. This is much more noticeable on the "With the Beatles" tracks, as they were recorded in twotrack stereo.

Worth noting is the inclusion of the stereo version of "Thank You Girl," as The Beatles' Second Album featured the only "true" stereo version of the song released on any US or UK album for over 40 years, until another stereo version of the song was released on the 2009 remastered edition of Past Masters (The Beatles Second Album stereo version of "Thank You Girl" was also included on The Beatles Beat, a German release). Since some echo was added, this version remains a bit of a rarity. The Capitol album mix is also unique in that its version contains three additional harmonica riffs, two during the bridge and one at the very end of the song. For its Americanalbum debut, Capitol took this stereo version and transferred it into a twotoone stereotomono mixdown for the mono album release, thus creating an alternative mono mix of the song. The stereo version of "Money" also underwent the same twotoone stereotomono mixdown for this album, thus creating another alternative mono mix. In the mono version of Vontae Davis Colts Jersey "I Call Your Name", the cowbell comes in at the very beginning of the song, whereas in the stereo version it comes in after the beginning of the vocal. Harrison's opening 12string guitar phrase is also different between the mono and stereo versions. In "Long Tall Sally", the stereo version has echo while the mono version is lacking it. The mono version of "You Can't Do That" is different to the one released on the British album "A Hard Day's Night" for unknown reasons.

The Legend of Bagger

The Legend of Bagger Vance is a 2000 American film directed by Robert Redford and starring Will Smith, Matt Damon and Charlize Theron. state of Georgia in 1931. This was Jack Lemmon's final film before his death in 2001.

On release, the film was attacked by several African American commentators and reviewers for using the "magical negro" as a plot device.[2][3][4] Since the film's release, some in the mainstream media have also described the film Shonn Greene Titans Jersey as flawed and racially insensitive.[5]Promising golfer Rannulph Junuh (Matt Damon) is Savannah, Georgia's favorite son, and Adele Invergordon (Charlize Theron) is his beautiful girlfriend from a rich family. While serving as a captain in the US Army during World War I Junuh is traumatized when his entire company is wiped out in battle. Though he earns the Medal of Honor, he returns to Georgia and lives a shadowy life as a drunk, golf being just a distant memory.

Years later (circa 1930,[6] as Bobby Jones retired from golf at age 28, during the Great Depression), Adele is trying to recover her family's lost fortune by holding a fourround, twoday exhibition match between Jones (Joel Gretsch) and Walter Hagen (Bruce McGill), the best golfers of the era, with a grand prize of $10,000. She's holding it at Shonn Greene Jersey a golf resort her father built as the Depression struck. However, she needs a local participant to generate local interest, so she asks her estranged love Junuh to play.

Junuh is Sammie Lee Hill Titans Jersey approached by a mysterious traveler carrying a suitcase who appears while Junuh is trying to hit golf balls into the dark void of night. The man identifies himself as Bagger Vance (Will Smith) and says he will be Junuh's caddy. He then helps Junuh to come to grips with his personal demons and helps him to play golf again.

When the match starts, Jones and Hagen each play well in their distinctive ways, but Sammie Lee Hill Jersey Junuh plays poorly and is far behind after the first round. With Bagger caddying for him and giving advice, Junuh rediscovers his "authentic swing" in the second round and makes up some ground. In the third round, closes the gap even more. Junuh and Adele also find their romance rekindling.

Late in the final round, Junuh disregards Bagger's advice at a crucial point and after that plays poorly. He hits a ball into a forest, where he has a traumatic World War I flashback, but Bagger's words help him to focus on golf. Junuh pulls back to a tie with Jones and Hagen, then has a chance to win on the final hole, but calls a penalty on himself when his ball moves after he tries to remove an obstacle.

Seeing from this that Junuh has grown and matured, Bagger decides his golfer doesn't need him any more. Bagger leaves him as mysteriously as he met him, with the 18th hole unfinished. Though losing a chance to win because of the penalty, Junuh sinks an improbable putt to tie Jones and Hagen, so the match ends in a gentlemanly tie, the three golfers shake hands with all of Savannah cheering, and Junuh and Adele get back together.

During the match, Bagger Vance has a young assistant, Hardy Greaves (J. Michael Moncrief), who caddies after Bagger leaves. The beginning of the film features Hardy as an old man (Jack Lemmon) playing golf in the present day. Hardy experiences a heart attack and loses conciousness. The story ends with an old Hardy awakening and seeing a neveraging Bagger Vance on the golf course. Bagger beckons, Hardy follows.

The god Krishna appears as Bhagavan (Bagger Vance) to help him to follow his path as the warrior and hero that he was meant to be. This relationship was fully explained by Steven J. Rosen in his book Gita on the Green, for which Steven Pressfield wrote the foreword.[7]

Reaction from movie critics was mixed. Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a score of 42% based on 128 reviews.[8]

Film critic Roger Ebert, who gave it 3 stars, said, "It handles a sports movie the way Billie Holiday handled a trashy song, by finding the love and pain beneath the story. It was mostly written by Rachel Portman, except for tracks one ("My Best Wishes"), thirteen ("Bluin' the Blues") and fourteen ("Mood Indigo"), which were written by Fats Waller, Muggsy Spanier and Duke Ellington, respectively.
